Renewable energy installers

Renewable energy installers sit between two worlds. Commercial solar, battery storage and heat pump installations are projects, with budgets, phases, milestones and billing rules. But the work itself happens in the field: surveys, installations, commissioning visits and after-care service. Keeping the project view and the field view in step is one of the hardest parts of running the business.

The industry challenge

In many installers, project managers plan in one system and dispatchers schedule field work in another. Work orders are created by hand from project plans, time and expenses are re-keyed, and project managers find out a task is complete only when someone updates a spreadsheet. Technicians record site notes on paper or in photos on their phones, so important details about roof conditions, cable routes or customer requests never reach the office.

The effect is slower billing, inaccurate project margins and repeated site visits. For installers with tight margins and growing order books, that friction limits how fast they can scale.

What Microsoft is delivering

Several recent Dynamics 365 updates address this gap:

  • Work orders from project tasks. Field Service work orders can be created directly from Project Operations project tasks, or existing work orders linked to tasks. This reached general availability on 31 July 2026 and supports task-based billing, where contract rules apply at task level.
  • Closing the loop. Microsoft's roadmap includes automatically completing a linked project task when its work order is completed, and capturing project expenses directly from work orders on web and mobile.
  • Mobile technician tools. A mobile notes control gives technicians a mobile-first way to create and review notes on forms (preview June 2026, GA August 2026). Microsoft Copilot in the Field Service mobile app, in targeted release, lets technicians ask natural-language questions about Field Service data, such as an asset's work history.
  • Agentic ERP. In a 23 September 2026 announcement, Microsoft set out plans for AI agents across finance, supply chain, field service and HR, with ERP connectors for agents generally available and many agent capabilities in preview through to March 2027.

Where the value shows up

Business areaImpact
Project controlField work anchored to project tasks, with status flowing back to the plan
BillingTask-based billing and faster invoicing once field work is complete
Technician productivityBetter notes and Copilot answers on site, fewer calls to the office
Margin visibilityTime and expenses captured against the right project tasks
Customer experienceFewer repeat visits caused by lost site information

A worked scenario

(An illustrative example.) An installer is delivering rooftop solar and battery storage across a portfolio of retail warehouses. The project manager plans each site as a set of project tasks: survey, installation, grid connection and commissioning.

Work orders are created directly from those tasks and scheduled in Field Service. On site, the technician uses Copilot in the mobile app to check the asset history at a site with an earlier installation, records roof access notes with the mobile notes control and logs expenses against the work order. When commissioning is completed, the linked project task is marked complete and the milestone is ready for billing under the contract's task rules.

Adoption considerations

  • Separate GA from preview. Build on generally available integration first; pilot preview and targeted-release features carefully.
  • Align project and field data models. Agree how project tasks map to work order types and incident types.
  • Review integration choices. Microsoft is deprecating older Data Integrator templates for Field Service in favour of newer integrations; plan accordingly.
  • Prepare technicians. Train crews on mobile notes and Copilot, including offline behaviour.
  • Govern agents. For agent capabilities, set clear rules about what they may change and who reviews their proposals.

The bottom line

For renewable energy installers, growth depends on running many projects through a field workforce without losing control of time, cost and billing. Linking project tasks to work orders, improving mobile tools and adding agents across ERP processes moves Dynamics 365 closer to a single connected flow from plan to rooftop to invoice. Some pieces are ready now and others are still maturing. An experienced Dynamics 365 Field Service and Project Operations adviser can help you sequence adoption sensibly.
